Character Background

• History: Here
• Core Relationships:

• Ryunosuke Naruhodo: One of the most influential of Kazuma's core relationships is the one with Ryunosuke. Prior to his "death" and subsequent bout of amnesia, Ryunosuke was one of Kazuma's closest, if not the closest, friends. It is his belief in his friend's path, his conviction of truth, that has him convincing the other of stowing away to England in the hopes of having his help with his "mission". Unbeknownst to Ryunosuke, this was not a matter of studying and changing the law, but of being tasked with a part in an assassination plot. Ultimately, it is likely his hope that having Ryunosuke along will help him puzzle away out of the plot or he'll have a defense attorney he can trust in the event the plot gets carried off that has him convincing his friend to join him in a foreign land. It is Ryunosuke's conviction to the truth that ends up being a saving grace in the courtroom later when they face off on opposite sides. Kazuma is blinded by the fact that van Zeiks may have had a hand in his father's death that he doesn't immediately wish to seek the truth--something Ryunosuke reminds him is of the utmost importance. The law should always seek the truth. Following his friend's lead, the pair bring to light the corruption in the English court of law and move forward on the path to change the systems of law at their core.

• Yujin and Susato Mikotoba: Another formative relationship for Kazuma is the one he holds with the Mikotobas, his adoptive family. Having lost both his father and his mother at a young age, Yujin Mikotoba took him in, ultimately helping to raise him and fund his education. During his studies, Susato was often a presence--curious about the law and about her older brother. Susato was someone Kazuma grew close to and trusted, evidenced by the fact that she had been elected to formally accompany him to England as an assistant--and had been expected to stay there when he reappeared. Susato's relief in finding Kazuma alive again, and her belief in his integrity, further helped both him and Ryunosuke in their penultimate trial to uncover the deep-seated corruption in the courts. Her communication with her father, and Shlomes, ultimately led to having their assistance as part of the process. Yujin's relationship with him is a bit more soured and nuanced due to him trying to protect Kazuma by hiding the truth of his father's death. While Yujin holds no blame for his father's fate, Kazuma is not so close to him as he might have been had the truth been given from the start.

• Barok van Zieks: The relationship with van Zieks is a complicated one, tied up in Kazuma's amnesiac episode and in the past with the fate of Kazuma's father. When first presented to van Zieks as a possible apprentice, the relationship was rather tumultuous due to van Ziek's disdain for the Japanese as a result of the belief that Kazuma's father, Genshin, had betrayed Klint van Zieks and murdered him in cold blood. This is only further complicated when Barok is implicated in the murder of Gregson and Kazuma is assigned as the prosecutor of the case. With Klint dead, the blame for Genshin's death falls to Barok in Kazuma's eyes--this causes him to take steps to ensure Barok is exposed as a murderer, regardless of whether or not it is the truth. Ultimately, when the facts behind Klint's murder and the Professor killings come to light, it leads Barok and Kazuma to come to a more neutral ground, with Kazuma resuming his tutelage under the more experienced prosecutor.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

If one knew Kazuma prior to his travels to England, or even on the surface following, the first trait that would come to mind is that he is an intelligent and well-spoken young man. At university, he was well known for his achievements both in academics and in martial arts--both of which required mental fortitude and focus. His abilities were further highlighted when he was chosen to be a representative of the university in England through an exchange program and to receive the qualifications necessary to be an attorney despite his young age. However, his wit and cunning can land him in trouble, particularly when he challenges any form of authority--a point of contention with local prosecutors and bailiffs in Japan.

Another trait of Kazuma's is his sense of loyalty and support for those he cares about. This is most apparent with Ryunosuke and their fast friendship. Kazuma is often closed off with other people, but upon meeting Ryunosuke he is quick to reveal his own failings in the speech contest, reassuring Ryunosuke that even though he may have had the better speech the other man had the better delivery and thus deserved the accolades he received. This support goes further when Kazuma brings him along to England, once again saying that he would be a good choice for a defense attorney despite Ryunosuke's own protestations despite his success with his own defense, not days before.

Kazuma's intelligence and a strong sense of loyalty ultimately come together when it comes to his opinion and sense of justice. The loyalty and belief he has in Ryunosuke reminded him of his own convictions with the law when it came to revealing the truth of the Professor killings and the corruption within the judicial system in England. Following this victory, Kazuma has a renewed sense of purpose in removing this corruption from the government and obtaining a system that worked for people and not simply for a conviction and a closed case. His resolve to finish things in England first and to then bring these revelations and revolution to Japan only serves to highlight his belief in Truth within Justice--without it there can be no truely just system.

(2+) Negative Experiences:

While Kazuma is very much the embodiment of ideals, these ideals have been deconstructed and misconstrued through his character, his death, and his rebirth. The most prominent of these is his defiance of authority. Initially, this is mildly seen in his attempts to defend Ryunosuke in court. He is displeased with the seeming willingness the Japanese government had towards using Ryunosuke as a scapegoat in order to avoid a diplomatic incident, despite his innocence of the crime. However, this is taken to an extreme when he regains his memories and thus the need to avenge his father's unjust death at the hands of the English government. His passion for justice is misdirected at van Zieks first, a symbol of the very authority that convicted his father of crimes he didn't commit and without evidence. His goal at this point is vengeance, not justice.

This excessive nature is something that has always been present to some degree with Kazuma, most notably as a form of dramatics. At a speech contest in university, Kazuma stumbled on the final line of his speech. Instead of simply readjusting the line at the moment, he proceeded to continue attempting it for a whole ten minutes until he collapsed to his knees, a bumbling mess on stage. This is further accentuated when, in an attempt to help him after the speech, Ryunosuke teaches Kazuma a tongue twister that he proceeds to practice to the point of making his tongue bleed in order to achieve perfection.

The determination he exhibits can sometimes come at a detriment to himself and others when taken to the extreme. This is evident when he is first given the opportunity to go to England, having to agree to become an assassin to be selected. His determination to get to England and begin to dig into his father's case makes him agree to the terms, no matter how obscene they would seem to most anyone else. During his amnesiac episode, he recalled little else beyond the law, his name, and the drive to go to England. He was so determined to see to this final task that he took on jobs within cargo yards until he was finally able to make port--as an illegal alien. Furthermore, when pursuing the case against van Zieks, he forces a witness to recall a traumatic episode to the point of causing him to have a breakdown on the stand. When pushed to these extremes, Kazuma is like a man possessed--unable to stop until the result is realized or he is brought to his senses by someone else.
